It's Your Birthday: NYC's Hidden Hotspots PDF Print E-mail

It's no secret New York is well endowed with mega-high skyscrapers, mammoth personalities and egos to match; it's the ultimate playground for the rich and famous, the go-getter, the jet-setter and, well, just about everyone in between. It’s also no secret that it takes money to live here. Fortunately, every good New Yorker knows how to spend a little for a lot more bang. And we’re here to help.

It’s August, summer's winding down, and we want everyone to take full advantage of the party before it's too late. Whether you're having a birthday party or just want to celebrate the last days of summer, there’s always a place to go. One of our favorite NYC secrets – hotels.

You don't have to be a guest to enjoy the benefits (celeb-like treatment, rooftop pools, chic lounges, and a seemingly endless supply of beachy drinks). The key is: act like you own the place (without throwing telephones or trashing—that never gets you anywhere).

Here are some of are favorite hotels with the best birthday get-away/party attributes.

Gansevoort Park Ave Hotel:  Freshly opened and extremely trendy with the right amount of quirky--just the way the guys and Gansevoort Inc. would have it. The G is  the new "young and hip". Case in point, when you walk in, you’re greeted by not one, but three massive MoMa-friendly/new-age-y chandeliers, granite floors, and did we mention the fireplace? That’s just the beginning. Yeah, they have the prerequite bar/sexy lounge area, which is well worth the visit. But the real crème de la crème is the rooftop pool and Plunge Bar.  It’s even heated in the winter, for those of you that like late night swims under a full moon.

Soho Grand Hotel: Classic boutique hotel in the heart of Soho with a heavy hipster/celeb vibe. The main attraction here is the Grand Bar and lounge. With floor-to-ceiling windows, doors draped in gigantic mirrors, and plenty of privacy, the Grand is perfect for throwing that birthday guy or gal a party away from the in your face club vibe of the Meatpacking district.

The Maritime Hotel: With 3,000+ square feet of sheer rooftop-lux, the Cabanas at the Maritime Hotel are no strangers to the party circuit. Plus, it’s the perfect party spot for those hot August nights. Of all the rooftop bars in the city, Maritime is one of the best. Cabana feels a like a little tropical oasis in the middle of Manhattan. On Sundays, after brunch, always expect a dance party with plenty to look at.

Thompson LES: Why? Because it's the latest in the design duo that made boutique hotels have a soul. Plus, it's got a pool (with Andy Warhol’s facing staring you dead in eyes). The TLES pool is a party in itself. And everything from the bathrooms to the professionally bedmaking is straight gorgeous in this establishment. Go Saturday nights to literally party the night away.

There are plenty more hidden hotspots to be found in NYC. It just takes a little bit of looking. You'll be surprised what you find.

Daytripping: The Hamptons PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator
Wednesday, 14 July 2010 20:19
Tired of the urban? Even die-hard Manhattanites need a little reprieve from the gritty, nothing’s-out-of-bounds beat of The City. And in New York, that’s not hard to achieve. At all.

For one, there’s always the Hamptons, favorite of the filthy rich, noveau riche, and those ever-present wannabes. Whether you’re Trump, Diddy, or little Annie catching the Montauk Line  for the first time, a  little vacay Hamptons-side is never a bad thing. Plus, there’s always a party to discover For the New York birthday guy or gal who wants to get out of the city for bit, we have several favorite Hamptons’ party spots, and, yes, we are gonna share.

Rowdy Hall: In honor of  the World Cup, this beer fest has an English Pub feel with a French Bistro menu and of course, that Hamptons chic. Locals and visitors alike flock to Rowdy for a little Sunday supper and sports watching.

Montauk Baby …Plum Island and monsters aside, Montauk is like the LES née  Billyburg version of the Hamptons, that is to say, Hipster Central. After careful investigation by numerous blogs, Internet memes, and gossipmongers, it appears the Montauk Beach is where it’s at.

If not at the beach, try Montauk Yacht Club, which hosts parties, swimming, rump shaking, and more. Djs flock to the place as do throngs of well-heeled, car-driving Williamsburg denizens.

Bamboo: Sushi for dinner. No tar balls. Go-to spot come nighttime. ‘nuff said. (p.s. Catch “Eldridge East” Saturdays for some Dj action)

Axe Lounge @ Dune: Dune’s latest reincarnation is brought to you by those people with (sort of?) funny more weird commercials about the powers of a spray on deodorant. Go for laughs, stay for fun. Don’t worry, you won’t feel like you’re stepping into some bizarre real life version of an Axe commercial. This is a go to place in the Hamptons.

Getting there: No car? Not a problem because buses, blimps, trains, and speedboats all service the Hamptons. With style, of course. Check out luxury bus line Hampton Luxury Bus Liner or the Jitney bus line.

Either way, it’s worth the jaunt for a little hot and heavy beach action.

July in NY PDF Print E-mail

Wednesday, 14 July 2010 20:11
We said “Happy Birthday, America,” ate our apple pies and watched fireworks bursting in the night air. So now what, New Yorkers? It’s July, and the summer party season’s just heating up.

Restaurant Week

Even if you’re not a foodie, you’ll love restaurant week. How can you not? It’s got first class food for a steal. So, that fancy lunch at A Voce that you’ve always wanted to try...now you can because it won’t break the bank.  Double dip recession?  We don’t think so. Plus, it’s a great birthday surprise.

An Adventure in food. Here’s how it works: 275+ Restaurants. Two Weeks. You’ve got a couple of options:  A three-course lunch with a prix fix of $24.07 or the same for dinner at a slightly higher cost - $35. Beverages, tax, and gratuity, alas aren’t included (this is New York, afterall). Restaurant week is the perfect chance to take a birthday guy or gal out for some fine dining.

Some of the participating Gastrohubs:

·      Craftbar: Two words – Small Plates. A critic’s fave, Craftbar, has a seasonal menu with simple, yet quality ingredients and family-style dining.

·      Nobu: Sushi king.

·      Dos Caminos: Very popular Mexican restaurant with guacamole made tableside.

·      Blue Water Grill: Grab some topnotch seafood before the tarballs invade. Blue Water Grill is constantly packed and has  some tasty oyster treats.

Head to the Roof

Ready to party? For the New York party crowd, summer is all about showing some skin at the hottest hangouts. One thing Manhattan is great at is building lavish rooftop bars.

Here are some of New York’s latest rooftop offerings:

Up:  A chic upscale flourish with incredible, clear as day, views of the Chrysler building, a retractable glass ceiling,  a fire place, a patio with living green walls, an indoor game room, another bar backlit by LED lights and a great selection of scotches.

Mercat Negre Rooftop
: Yes, even Williamsburg has its own rooftop bar.  The Mercat, known for its innovative selection of Barcelona-inspired dishes (the chef is a recent NYC transplant) features a full food and drink menu with specialties like Squid ink pasta and paella at its downstairs venue. Up top, there ample deck room with wooden benches and picnic tables.

230 Fifth: Open 365 days a year from 4 in the afternoon to 4 in the morning, 230 Fifth is a New York party palace created by the former owner of Roxy and Palladium. It’s got a sexy Penthouse Lounge/Bar, a heated rooftop garden and a whole lot more.  230 Fifth is great for throwing birthday parties or just a night on the town.

Press: Located on the 16th floor, Press Lounge has a sophisticated, sexy, chic uptown girl in the city kind of vibe complete with a 20-foot reflecting pool and super-comfy leather couches inside. Press is also open all four seasons. The menu is an eclectic mix of America/ Italian cuisine.

So, if you’re aching for a change in the club scene, or want to take your special birthday someone out for a fun party, New York’s rooftop scene doesn’t disappoint. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the City from above.

NYC Blaze: Too. Hot? Hit the A/C PDF Print E-mail

New Yorkers may complain about the dog-in-crate feel of winters – nobody’s out, slippery sidewalks, and not enough scotch to go around, yet when summer’s heat creeps around, some New Yorkers (don’t worry, we know you’re out there) tend to like the cooler climes where A/C rules, and UV rays are none the wiser.

For the NYC Party Girl or Boy who wants to keep that shiny sheen to a minimum, there’s plenty of places to roam - all the while making like you partied in the Cayman’s for a hot minute.

In June, the party in New York is always evolving. Case in point, the number of bar openings in June. Here are a few:

Casa Mezcal: Think of it as an authentic Mexican cantina, but north of border, no fear or running into Juarez-style cartel here. Casa Mezcal is just as the name says, a bar dedicated to the many flavors of mescal. Beverages include free flavoring bites of orange, salt and agave worms.

Upstairs: Another rooftop bar, this one’s located on the 31st floor of Kimberly Hotel and is 4,000 square feet of lux. Can anyone say heated floors, 360 degree views, and retractable glass ceilings and walls.

Branded Saloon: Hold onto to your steed, Branded takes cowboy culture to new heights. For your pleasure,  Branded has an authentic foot-powered piano complete with ragtime and Western tunes, 12 microbrews, of course, plenty of whiskey. Yeeee-Haw!

Loreley Williamsburg: For the beer garden enthusiast. This sister locale of the LES German beer pub, Loreley is modeled after the famous Brauhaus in Cologne, and has all of your favorite German beers (Hofbrau Maibock, Spaten Lager, Kranz Koelsch to name a few).

Done Drinking: Shop till You Drop

Need a break from the bar scene? Take some time out for retail therapy. June offers sales galore- a perfect excuse to find yourself some new threads while shopping for that ideal birthday gift.

Sample sales abound and New York ’s got them every week. In June Helmut Lang, Vena Cava, Catherine Malandrino and Y-3 are offering steeping discounts on designer duds.

Of course, there’s always Saks, where you not only shop, but also can throw a cocktail party or corporate reception. Plus, Saks has two powerhouse restaurants with a delectable selection of international fair.

There are new boutiques opening up in June as well:

Black Gold: This Brooklyn boutique offers a speakeasy feel and an electic mix of records, taxidermy and antiques.

Longchamp has  a new home. Two words: Parisian Chic

Petit Boudoir: a new vintage store with designer finds like Givenchy and Ralph Lauren.

Jumbo pop-up shop: Sneaker paradise

So there you have it, for a cool ride  in NYC you can do a little afternoon shopping, then don the new threads for the party later.

June In New York : Follow the Music PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator
Monday, 21 June 2010 19:39
Partied too hard for Memorial Day New York? Never. It’s a new month and June has plenty to offer, especially for those summer NYC birthday girls and boys who want to party. For one, check out the concerts. New York media is the Queen of throwing concerts (sorry Perez). Good Morning America and Today’s got Gaga, Bieber and plenty more in Central Park and NBC Plaza . Check it out.

For night owls and morning lovers, however, never fear, the New York party scene is rife with options. For one, oddly enough, New York ( New York of  high rents and the most expensive house salad this side of the Mississippi ) is actually offering a bevy of freebies.

New York Has Free Concerts

Let’s start with concerts. Besides the  GMA and Today free concert series, there’s Summer in the Square, which offers free lunchtime concerts and afternoon yoga on Thursdays, followed by a little night music. At Clinton Cove Park Mondays, more free concerts. Every Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Harlem Meer in Central Park, listen to Jazz, blues, gospel, and, of course, Latin, on the house.

Central Park’s Summer Stage is the place to go for free concerts, theater and dance in the heart of Manhattan . Bryant Park is celebrating Broadway by putting on free hour-long Broadway performances during lunchtime. You can also enjoy a nice afternoon beer at Bryant – drinking’s actually allowed in the park.

Not So Free, but Fun

If you want to break out the pocketbook, you can throw your own concert at Pulse Karaoke Lounge and Suites, which has a fully stocked bars (a little courage before belting your heart out), and six private suites. The suites even have programmable L.E.D. lighting systems and with 85,000 songs in 14 languages, you’ll never run out of a set list.

Other good music venues:

Hudson Terrace’s Rooftop Bar has Dj spinning every Thursday.

The Bowery and the Music Hall of Williamsburg are a classic music venues. These Lower East Side Haunts have got the hottest indie acts all summer long. One of the main appeals of the Bowery, however is its chic, fully stocked bar making it a great place to hangout even if you’re not into the band.

Brooklyn Bowl is the place to go for a round of bowling and live music. With its Coney Island theme and food by Blue Ribbon and, icy cold pitchers, the Bowl has a little bit of everything.

Strike out and hear the music New Yorkers, June is the perfect excuse to party, while it’s still not too hot.

May Day! Summer beckons in New York PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator
Monday, 24 May 2010 18:07

We all know April Showers bring May flowers, but in NYC, May means  the Summer’s coming and with it comes plenty of reasons to party. After all, May is the unofficial start of summer in The City that Never Sleeps.

For the May birthday guy or gal, the only question is, where’s the party at come May?

Lower East Side Haunts

First of all, let’s get things straight, New Yorkers, May means easing in to things. No doubt, there’s still time to get that summer body straight, and to tenderly take to the newly sun-soaked streaks (we all know the feeling of too many nights spent with eyes pealed with science-like precision on sidewalk chinks and gum stain blemishes in the name of keeping warm – in other words, cold. Now’s the time to switch from Johnny Walker to daiquiris and caipirihnas. It’s your birthday, after all.

The May birthday bunch needs to get outside, and rediscover the City. Start off with a free and healthy Walking Tour of the Lower East Side. Every Sunday, you’ll  get to experience the LES (in daylight, no less) and learn its history and highlights. Meets every Sunday at 11 am in front of Katz’s Delicatessen.  And when you’ve had enough, head to these fine establishments:

May Madness veterans get started at the Russian Vodka Room. Name says it all. Part Odessa foodhall and part midtown Martini heaven (without the skinny sizes), the Russian Vodka Room offers everything and the kitchen sink. Go there to drink, but end up eating a plate of supersized herrings and potatoes with a side of hot peppered gravlax and loads of hefty, but oh-so-delicious) brown breads. Did we mention the flavored vodkas? A birthday party here is sure

Move aside, Beatrice, Chloe 81 (Bar Artisanal) is the next hipper-than-thou hotspot reserved for the trendsetter, jet-set artist, designer, industry and size 0 model types. It’s got a loungy, sexy bistro/ local neighborhood watering hole (if your local neighborhood happened to be the Soho Grand) sort of vibe. The drinks are strong, and the doorman, though picky, is nice. The crowd will definitely inspire you to renew that gym membership (seriously, you’ll be Googling the number for Equinox, barside). But, by far the best part is The Music. Chloe 81’s DJs spin sugary pop like nobody’s business.

Feeling the need to move? bOb bar is the place to be once the clock strikes 12. bOb bar turns from cozy, dimly lit little bar with a Rorschach-stained super-sized banquette and brick line walls to riotous dance floor pumping hiphop beats and reggae faves. Saturdays at bOb are always packed. Consider you spring training workout for the day.

Moving on up…

For a quirky alternative to the LES bar scene, and the ultimate Birthday party vehicle, check out the New York Trolley. You can bring your own beverages, bring your own party, and even your own music for a private shindig on wheels. The trolley goes where you go and stops where you stop. Consider it an urban safari – the perfect excuse to peep the streets of New York all the while enjoying a little May day libation. Plus, you get to party “outdoors” without while driving without having to abide by the rules.

See, easing into summer doesn’t have to be stressful at all. Find the right locale, grab a cocktail, and make sure to enjoy the outdoors before the summer heat bath arrives.

Valentine's Day PDF Print E-mail
Written by emrgmedia
Thursday, 04 February 2010 22:23

Just because we’re in the midst of a recession, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t get in the mood for romance – especially for Valentine’s Day. This Valentine’s Day simply calls for a little originality. After all, celebrating Valentine’s Day in New York is like being a kid in a candy store – full of sugary sweet possibilities. This V-day, go for the rock candy instead of the jelly beans. You might like it.

Fortunately, whether you are a single Party Girl or Playboy, married, divorced, or in between, the Big Apple has something to offer everyone. A good time in New York City is possible anywhere.

Get Started Early
Carnival has a great pre-Valentine’s Day Party on February 12th featuring contortionists, and sword swallowers as well as plenty of carnival-themed games (funhouse, anyone?).

NYC for Couples:
Get things heated with a little hotel room time. Romance needs creativity. To keep the spark going, treat yourself and take your special someone to a romantic stay at one of NYC’s finest hotels.
Located in the Meatpacking District 18 Ninth Ave. at W. 13th St., the Gansevoort Hotel is the perfect spot for any couple that wants to indulge. It’s a playground for the stylish jet setters and has a spectacular heated rooftop terrace and spacious guest rooms. Enjoy a couple’s massage in one of the luxurious suites.

For dinner, head downtown to Blue Water Grill, with its cozy downstairs jazz-filled lounge and its upstairs selection of sushi and other fine fusion cuisine. The crowd isn’t bad to look at either.

NYC for Singles: Hello Happy Hour
For the single folks, Valentine’s Day doesn’t mean curling up with a heart-shaped box of chocolates until it’s all over. Being single in the City has its advantages - like free booze. The Village Pourhouse scores extra points for throwing two singles celebrations. The first is aptly titled, the Black Hearts Party, and is akin to speed dating sans speed and with more drinks. The second is a classic Anti-Valentine bash (cleverly named Ex-orcism), which offers people the chance to let loose of their exes. Make sure to bring photos. Free Bud Light will be flowing.

Something for Everyone: Kingpin Ain’t Got Nothing on Me
That’s right. Bowling. Don’t the let the clichés fool you; bowling has made it into the noughties and is here to stay no matter what they say. The perfect place to rock your rose bowl is at 300 New York. It’s a bowling alley with edge. Think modern sexy with a full bar and night-club vibe. The food is nothing to ignore either. Casual and classic American cuisine comes piping hot straight from the grill. Indulge in the Pazookie, a giant chocolate chip cookie perfect for sharing. Take your friends, family, lovers, exes, and bring in Valentine’s with some good old fashioned competition.
